When moving to the TV, I can do the &#8220;long press on the power button&#8221; to get to the right resolution, which is simple enough.\u00a0 Even if it does reset any theme settings.\u00a0 Setting up the PS3 with the monitor is a bit trickier as it does not support 480i or 576i, so I need to pull out an old 34cm TV I have sitting around, and need to do a cable shuffle and it&#8217;s all a lot more hassle than I&#8217;m interested in.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid that, here is the combination of controller presses to get to 1080p without being able to see what you&#8217;re doing.\u00a0 It is easiest when you have working audio, so you can hear the clicks as you navigate the menus.<\/p>\n<p>These are done with PS3 firmware 2.70.\u00a0 It may change in later versions.\u00a0 You follow these instructions at your own risk.<\/p>\n<p>Pause between each press, particularly X presses as there is often a little delay involved in the screen updating.<\/p>\n<h4>To blindly change the resolution :<\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<table border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong>Turn on the PS3<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong> Press the PS button on controller<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong>All the way up<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>(to the top of the <strong>Games<\/strong> menu)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong> All the way left<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong>1 step right<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>(to the <strong>Settings<\/strong> menu)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong>All the way down <\/strong><\/td>\n<td>(bottom of the <strong>Settings<\/strong> menu)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong>4 steps up<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>(<strong>Display Settings<\/strong>)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong>X<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>(select <strong>Display Settings<\/strong>)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong>X <\/strong><\/td>\n<td>(select <strong>Video Output Settings<\/strong>)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong>1 step up<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>(In my case, select <strong>Component \/ D-Terminal<\/strong> output. 2 steps up for <strong>HDMI<\/strong>,\u00a0 no steps for <strong>Composite \/ S Video<\/strong>, 1 step down for <strong>AV MULTI \/ SCART<\/strong>)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong>X<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>(select connector type)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong>X<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>(confirm connector change)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong> 1 step left<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong> X<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>(confirm that it works)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong> All down<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>(select <strong>1080p<\/strong>.\u00a0 Back up one for <strong>1080i<\/strong>, up two for <strong>720p<\/strong>, three for <strong>576p<\/strong>)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong>X<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>(select the desired resolution)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong>1 step right<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>(move to next screen &#8211; all going well, the screen should be working from this point)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong>1 step left<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong>X<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>(to confirm that it works)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>At that stage, you should be able to see what you&#8217;re doing :)\u00a0\u00a0 If not, turn off the PS3 and start again, hoping you haven&#8217;t reformatted the HDD along the way :p<\/p>\n<p>The other circumstance I find myself wanting to navigate the XMB blindly is to get into OtherOS without having to change the resolution first.\u00a0 This will only work if you have already installed a bootloader (otheros.bld).<\/p>\n<h4>To blindly boot into the OtherOS:<\/h4>\n<blockquote><p>Turn on the PS3<br \/>\nPress the PS button on controller<br \/>\nAll the way up<br \/>\nAll the way left<br \/>\n1 step right<br \/>\n5 steps down<br \/>\nX<br \/>\nAll the way down<br \/>\n3 steps up<br \/>\nX<br \/>\n1 step down<br \/>\nX<br \/>\n1 step left<br \/>\nX<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I move my Playstation 3 between my SD family television and an old 20&#8243; IBM monitor in my office at 1080p (connected via one of these).
